The Hidden Cost of Idle Cloud Resources

Idle cloud resources are virtual machines, databases and storage that stay active but unused, like renting a treadmill you never step on and paying for it every month.

They slip through easily. Cloud estates are vast, IT teams are busy with security, uptime and performance, and a handful of forgotten instances rarely feels urgent. Multi-cloud makes it harder still, since AWS, Azure and Google each have their own billing models and interfaces.

DevOps adds to it, spinning up test environments quickly and not always shutting them down, much like leaving the oven on after cooking. Provider tools such as Cost Explorer and Advisor exist but go underused. The fix is practical: automate shutdown of unused instances, run regular audits, and set alerts for underutilised resources, cutting both cost and carbon.
